Brumby: drones that read a cow's body language
An Australian startup trains drones with reinforcement learning to muster cattle the way an experienced stockman would, backing off the moment an animal shows stress.
I keep finding AI in places I would never have thought to look, and this week it was a cattle paddock. Sam Rogers grew up on his family's cattle station in Australia, where moving a herd between fields meant motorbikes, horses, sometimes a helicopter, and well over 100,000 dollars a year. That is the problem his startup, originally called GrazeMate and now renamed Brumby, set out to fix.
The product is a drone that musters cattle on its own. A rancher opens an app, taps a paddock, and the drone finds the herd and guides it to the next field, no pilot required. What it does along the way is the part worth pausing on. Instead of just flying at the animals, the system was trained with reinforcement learning to read cattle behaviour in real time, tracking small cues like the angle of a cow's neck or head. Head down and moving means calm progress, so the drone holds its position. Head pops up, a sign of stress, and the drone immediately backs away, the same read-and-adjust instinct an experienced stockman relies on, except running continuously and never getting impatient.
While it musters, the same drone also photographs water troughs and fence lines and, in a newer version already piloted on farms in Queensland and New South Wales, estimates cattle weight and available pasture. A job that used to eat a whole day now runs in the background while the rancher is doing something else entirely.
What I like here is the framing choice: teaching the machine the animal's language rather than teaching the animal to follow the machine. It also nudges ranchers toward moving cattle more often, which is good for rotational grazing and soil health, so the upside is not just saved hours.
